Cast and crew announced for Invictus Theatre Company’s season opening JULIUS CAESAR
Modern dress staging to be directed by Charles Askenaizer

CHICAGO – The cast and creative team were announced today for Invictus Theatre Company’s modern dress production of Shakespeare’s JULIUS CAESAR, to be directed by Company Artistic Director Charles Askenaizer. A cast of 15 will play the historical tragedy’s 46 roles, bringing the Bard’s sprawling work to Invictus’s storefront in Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood. JULIUS CAESAR will open to the press on Monday, October 24 at 7:00 p.m., at the Company’s Reginald Vaughn Theater, 1106 W. Thorndale Ave., Chicago. The production will preview from October 20 to 23 and play through November 20, 2022.

Taking the title role of the popular Roman general assassinated by his compatriots will be Chuck Munro, previously seen as Antonio in Invictus’s THE MERCHANT OF VENICE and most recently as Rev. Winemiller in Violet Sky’s SUMMER AND SMOKE. Mikha’el Amin, previously known as Michael Lewis and remembered for his powerful Invictus performances as Laertes in HAMLET and Walter Lee Younger in A RAISIN IN THE SUN, will play Marc Antony. Daniel Houle, whose credits include roles with TimeLine Theatre, Oak Park Festival, and BoHo Theatre, is the production’s Caius Cassius. Askenaizer, who played the title role in Invictus’s HAMLET, will be the duplicitous Marcus Brutus. The cast also includes Rick Yaconis, Brandon Boler, Charlie Diaz, Joe Feliciano, Joseph Beal, Colin K. Jones, John Chambers, Maria Clara Ospina, Gavin Mueller, Huy Nguyen, and Rachel Livingston. Understudies are Rick Yaconis (Julius Caesar, Caius Cassius), Ben Murphy (Marcus Brutus, others), and Michaela Voit, Ryan Cody, Sheri Reda, and Anthony Augustine.

The creative and production team includes Kevin Rolfs (Set and Props Designer), Emily Bloomer (Costume Designer), Beau Peterson-Quinn (Wardrobe Supervisor), Petter Wahlbäck (Sound Designer), Joe Larkin (Lighting Designer), Jay Donley (Fight/Intimacy Designer), Sarafina Vecchio (Text Coach), Todd Henry Faulstich (Production Manager), Tristan Odenkirk (Associate Director), and Julia Witty (Stage Manager). Steve Nordmark is Box Office/Front of House Manager.

As the first play in Invictus’s season exploring the theme “Rhetoric and Groups,” Askenaizer sees parallels to current events.  He says, “JULIUS CAESAR and Marc Antony’s frequently quoted ‘Friends, Romans, countrymen’ speech in which he incites a crowd to violence after the assassination of Caesar has clear parallels to the January 6th rally and its oratory urging citizens to challenge the established government.”

Invictus Theatre Company has, over its six-year history, built a reputation for intimate and honest interpretations of classics with fidelity to the original texts and close attention to character development. The company’s extraordinarily successful 2021-22 season included Askenaizer’s direction of HAMLET, which Albert Williams of the CHICAGO READER called “storefront Shakespeare at its best.” The Jeff Award recommended RUINED, directed by Ebby Offord, was described by NEW CITY’s Ted Fishman as “a treasure to hold on to.” Kathy Hey of THIRD COAST REVIEW said Askenaizer’s WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? (also Jeff Recommended) was “raw, tragic, and unforgettable.”

Invictus Theatre Company announces 2022-23 season

Three-play season will explore “Rhetoric and Groups” through JULIUS CAESAR, THE MOUNTAINTOP, and THE CRUCIBLE.

CHICAGO – “Friends, Romans, countrymen” and “I have a dream” may well be the two most famous lines associated with oratorical rhetoric. For its sixth season of production and its second season in residence at its Reginald Vaughn Theater, Invictus Theatre Company will present three plays examining the power of rhetoric to move community opinion and action, whether for good or for bad. The season will open with a modern dress interpretation of Shakespeare’s JULIUS CAESAR, in which a group of political rivals plot to kill the popular general and then convince through oratory and rhetoric that their actions were justified. It will be followed by Katori Hall’s THE MOUNTAINTOP, a drama about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose oratorical skills defined the U.S. civil rights movement. The season closer will be Arthur Miller’s THE CRUCIBLE – a semi-fictional story of the 1692 Salem Witch Trials in which the words of a religious zealot and a well-intentioned but misguided judge led a community to execute 20 of its citizens. Artistic Director Charles Askenaizer (who helmed last season’s HAMLET and Edward Albee’s WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?) will direct JULIUS CAESAR, Aaron Reese Boseman (director of Invictus’s 2020 A RAISIN IN THE SUN) will direct THE MOUNTAINTOP, and Charles Askenaizer (Invictus’s Artistic Director) will stage THE CRUCIBLE. All three plays will be performed in the company’s Reginald Vaughn Theater at 1106 W. Thorndale Avenue, in Edgewater.

Askenaizer says of the season selections, “these three plays – a classic from the year 1599, a modern classic from 1953, and a recent drama from 2012 – have particular resonance to the events and challenges of today. JULIUS CAESAR and Marc Antony’s frequently quoted ‘Friends, Romans, countrymen’ speech in which he incites a crowd to violence after the assassination of Caesar has clear parallels to the January 6th rally and its oratory urging citizens to challenge the established government. THE MOUNTAINTOP, on the other hand, through its examination of Dr. King’s work, shows the potential for orators in speeches like his 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech, to lead the populace toward positive action. Finally, THE CRUCIBLE, while written as a response to Senator McCarthy’s persecution of suspected communists in 1950’s America, has parallels to today’s ‘cancel culture.’ The need for critical thinking in response to rhetoric communicated through public oratory, media (mass or social), or one-to-one conversations; remains essential. We hope our productions of these three plays will spark vigorous discussions of this challenge.”

In Arthur Miller's drama set among the Salem witch trials of 1692, a young servant-girl maliciously accuses a farmer's wife of witchcraft. The farmer brings the girl to court to admit the lie, but the community's mass hysteria overtakes reason. First produced in 1953 as a comment on McCarthyism’s communist hunting, the play continues to resonate for contemporary audiences.

Invictus Theatre Founding Artistic Director Charles Askenaizer today announced full casting for the company's season closing production of Edward Albee's WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?. In this four-character drama that is often as wickedly funny as it is heartbreaking, two married couples battle with their spouses and each other over an alcohol-fueled night in a small, overstuffed living room. The tension the characters feel in these close quarters will be conveyed to the audience in Askenaizer’s storefront production in the 40-seat Reginald Vaughn Theatre at 1106 W. Thorndale, Chicago.

Leading the cast as George and Martha are James Turano and Andrea Uppling. Turano is a Chicago radio personality (WGN Radio) who has appeared on Chicago area stages in such roles as Richard Roma in GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS, Marc in ART, Michael in GOD OF CARNAGE, and Pozzo in WAITING FOR GODOT. Uppling most recently appeared with Invictus as Guildenstern in the company's acclaimed production of HAMLET. Keenan Odenkirk, also of that HAMLET cast, will be Nick. Rachel Livingston, whose credits range from musical theater (Louise in GYPSY) to television drama (CHICAGO PD) will be Honey. Understudies are Robin Treviño (George), Lisa Stran (Martha), Maria Clara Ospina (Honey) and an actor to be named to understudy Nick.

The production team is Kevin Rolfs (Set and Props Designer), Marquecia Jordan (Costume Designer and Wardrobe Supervisor), Warren Levon (Sound Designer), Levi Wilkins (Lighting Designer), Jay Donley (Fight/Intimacy Designer), Todd Henry Faulstich (Production Manager), Lewis Jones (Assistant Director), and a Stage Manager to be named.

While Invictus has been successful in bringing a large-scale play like its highly praised HAMLET to its 40-seat theater, a character-driven psychological drama like WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? is an especially good fit for Invictus and its venue. This four-character drama, in which the characters take turns exposing the secrets and weaknesses of each other, will benefit from a degree of intimacy usually only achieved in cinema or TV, but combined with the electricity of live performance.

Askenaizer elaborates, WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? is a relationship play, and in a way, a biting tragi-comedy love story between two complex and wounded characters. We are excited about the way the intimacy of our space will place the audience so close to the action that they may feel as if they are among the late-night party guests in the pressure cooker of George and Martha's living room, and experience the visceral, sharp humor of Albee's language up close."

Invictus Theatre Company has, over its five-year history, built a reputation for intimate and honest interpretations of classics with fidelity to the original texts and close attention to character development. NEW CITY called the company's RUINED "a treasure to hold on to," as the CHICAGO READER's Amanda Finn said, "If you're going to see a play right now, make it this one." The Reader's Albert Williams said the company's HAMLET was "stellar...storefront Shakespeare at its best."

Tickets for EDWARD ALBEE'S WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? are $25 for previews, $30 for the regular run, and are on sale now at www.invictustheatreco.com.

COVID-19 PRECAUTIONS AND POLICIES

Simon/Government Soldier/Aid Worker (Male-Identifying. Black. Late 20's to Early 30's.)- Fortune's cousin, friend, and confidant. Loyal to a fault. He fashions himself a soldier, but he's still managed to retain some softness. He's just here to make sure his friend doesn't get killed. This role requires the actor to play multiple parts. This role requires a lot of physical acting.

Hamlet is highly recommended!

We’re thrilled to share that our production of Shakespeare’s Hamlet is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Read the reviews here:

Around the Town (Julia Rath) -
Highly Recommended
"...There are not enough words in the English language to describe Charles Askenaizer in his role as the prince of Denmark and as director of the production. So I'll say in it Danish: Vidunderlig, which means wonderful and extraordinary at the same time! Askenaizer's quality and depth of acting are the essence of theatre artistry. His manner is beguiling and perfectly timed; his intensity superb. His facial expressions and body language oscillate with his display of wide-ranging emotions as he plays an illusorily mad character who is rational, cunning, and unpredictable to all, even to his closest friend Horatio. Askenaizer also enthralls us in his role as director, having made this highly action-oriented show easily watchable-this despite having a very small stage to work with in this renovated storefront theater. By innovatively using multiple doorways and by deftly shifting the actors around from one location to another, he has created the illusion of space."

Chicago Reader (Albert Williams) -
Highly Recommended
"...Invictus Theatre’s intimate, bare-bones modern-dress staging of Hamlet is storefront Shakespeare at its best. The company’s stated aim is to “promote a better understanding . . . of heightened language . . . to express the breadth of the human condition,” and this dynamic, clearly spoken non-Equity production delivers. Director Charles Askenaizer guides the ensemble and the audience together on a shared journey through the play’s grim narrative, illuminating its philosophical, spiritual, and political themes and its darkly ironic humor as well as its suspenseful plot."

Chicago Onstage (Joe De Rosa) -
Highly Recommended
"You should go.

There’s a wild energy to this Hamlet, an energy that comes from the simple fact that the Invictus Theatre Company’s production of this sprawling, winding, often frustrating, always compelling masterpiece is an act of love.”

Third Coast Review (Nancy Bishop) -
Highly Recommended
...Hamlet is all about the language. It’s thrilling to hear Shakespeare’s tragic tale spoken by a talented and well-directed team of actors. Invictus Theatre’s modern-dress production of the Bard’s 1601 script succeeds in making the language clear and forceful, with careful direction by Charles Askenaizer, who also stars as Hamlet. His performance is superb—emotional and nuanced in all the right places, sometimes fierce, sometimes manic or grief-stricken."

Buzznews.net (Wesley David) - Highly Recommended
"...There was something sweet in the chemistry between Laertes (Michael Lewis, excellent recently in "A Raisin In The Sun) and Ophelia (Ebby Offord). Certain scenes stood out for me and this was one of them. This begins their character arc and we are fully invested in them…"

'night, Mother is (HIGHLY) recommended!

We’re proud to announce that our production of ‘night, Mother by Marsha Norman is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

'NIGHT, MOTHER displays a mother and daughter relationship in a free fall crisis. Disillusioned Jessie Cates, a woman suffering from epilepsy and depression, announces to her mother Thelma, that she will be killing herself at the end of the evening. The ensuing evening is what playwright Marsha Norman describes as, "a fight for their lives" as Thelma begs, bargains, and beseeches her uncompromising daughter to change her plan. 'NIGHT, MOTHER unsparingly explores the impact of mental health on mothers and daughters in our society. This production will be an entirely virtual streamed performance.

‘Night, Mother by Marsha Norman
Directed by Diane Sintich
Performances: October 22, 2020 - November 8, 2020
Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7pm
Sundays at 3pm

"...Tekeisha Yelton-Hunter and Courtney Gardner both offer devastating performances in this Zoom production: Each woman embodies her role without giving way to excess. Gardner is particularly effective in her portrayal of Jessie, a woman who is simply tired of the struggle of living and who concludes that ending her life is preferable to continuing.

Third Coast Review (Nancy Bishop) - Highly Recommended
"...Director Diane Sintich embroiders a tense real-time drama about this mother-daughter relationship in Marsha Norman's 1982 play, 'night, Mother, for Invictus Theatre Company. Jessie (Courtney Gardner), divorced and depressed, calmly tells her Mama Thelma (Takeisha Yelton Hunter) about her plan to commit suicide tonight. Over the course of the evening, Jessie goes over all the requirements of running the house, cleans out the refrigerator, straightens up her bedroom, folds laundry and reassures her mother that she indeed loves her. But she can't bear to live any longer. Jessie has suffered from epilepsy since childhood. ("They're seizures, Mama, not fits!") She also has untreated depression."

Chicago Reader (Kerry Reid) - Highly Recommended
"What I am sure about is that Sintich's production features two fearless and layered performances. That Gardner and Yelton-Hunter make these connections in the virtual realm, without being able to actually touch and react to each other in person, is even more impressive. 'Night, Mother isn't easy to watch. But it finds new layers of urgency and staying power with Invictus."

Hyde Park Herald (Anne Spiselman) - Highly Recommended
"Under Diane Sintich's careful direction, Gardner's heavy-set, taciturn Jessie and Yelton-Hunter's relatively slight, talkative Thelma are a study in contrasts who try to communicate despite the mother-daughter tensions between them. They simultaneously love and are isolated from each other, a situation cannily mirrored by the necessary staging."

PicksInSix (Ed Tracy) - Recommended
"...Both Yelton-Hunter and Gardner expertly navigate the virtual challenges of the medium to deliver poignant performances. Gardner’s empathy, mixed with the single-minded enthusiasm of a person who is preparing for a vacation from which she will never return, is in sharp contrast to Yelton-Hunter’s pragmatic efforts to understand the true relationship between a mother and her daughter."

Daily Herald (Barbara Vitello) - Recommended
"Confessions and revelations accompany anger, guilt and long-held resentments. But there is nothing mawkish about Norman's subtly humorous play or director Diane Sintich's candid, emotional production, which -- aside from a few quick, jarring cuts -- is ably composed and builds nicely to a shattering conclusion.

Potent performances from Gardner and Yelton-Hunter are reason enough to hope Invictus remounts this revival on stage once the pandemic ends."

ChicagoOnStage (Karen Topham) - Recommended
"Norman’s play sets up an impossibly hopeless emotional situation and Invictus’ production evokes it forcefully. Watching both actresses react to Thelma’s final “‘Night, Mother” is a gut-punch, and Jessie’s heartwrenching pain afterward is completely earned. This is not an easy play to watch (especially if you have children and/or family members struggling with depression), but it is one that is not easily forgotten."

An update from ITC

At Invictus Theatre Company we are committed to upholding our solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. Invictus Theatre Company does not tolerate racism. In congruence with our earlier statement we wanted to share with you the actionable steps we have taken or will be taking to eliminate racism from our organization and to help create a just and equitable world for all:

We continue to grow and expand our Juvenile Justice diversion program “Shakespeare in the Courts” where we actively seek to dismantle systemic racism in the juvenile justice institution by empowering marginalized voices and changing cultural narratives around youth of color.

We continue to develop our youth leader program, which provides opportunities for youth of color to further their involvement in the arts and Invictus Theatre Company’s main stage productions.

We seek to continue to produce works by artists of color and marginalized voices to empower our communities and provide diverse, equitable, and inclusive programming.

We are in the process of professional development initiatives including educating our volunteer staff and board by taking anti-racism courses from Chicago ROAR.

We commit to equity in our casting and hiring process and are actively seeking people of color to join our board of directors.

We commit to continuing to listen, learn, and engage with all of our Chicago communities.

A percentage of our 'Night Mother ticket sales will be donated to organizations focusing on mental health and wellness in Black communities in Chicago.

We look forward to continuing this important work and staying in touch with you.
